hard cider

Alcoholic apple beverage

Hard cider is fermented apple juice containing alcohol, typically 4-8% by volume.

The qualifier "hard" distinguishes it from sweet, unfermented apple cider.

In British English, cider already implies the alcoholic drink, so the term hard cider is mainly American: We picked up a six-pack of hard cider at the orchard.
