pot still

Whisky maker's kettle

A pot still is a type of distillation apparatus consisting of a large copper or steel vessel heated directly from below.

The liquid inside vaporizes, rises through a neck, and condenses.

Unlike continuous column stills, pot stills operate in batches and produce spirits with more flavor and character.

They're traditional in whiskey and cognac production: Single malt Scotch must be made in pot stills.
