fortified wine

Spirit-enhanced grape beverage

Fortified wine is wine to which a distilled spirit—usually brandy—has been added, raising the alcohol content and often halting fermentation to preserve sweetness.

Port, sherry, Madeira, and vermouth are fortified wines.

The fortification originally helped wines survive long sea voyages without spoiling: a glass of port after dinner.
