Conestoga wagon

Pioneer freight hauler

A Conestoga wagon was a large, heavy covered wagon used in 18th and 19th century America to haul freight, especially over the Appalachian Mountains.

Named for the Conestoga Valley in Pennsylvania where they originated, these wagons had distinctive curved floors and canvas tops stretched over wooden bows.

They were pulled by teams of horses or oxen and became icons of American westward expansion, though prairie schooners—lighter wagons—eventually proved more practical for long overland journeys.
