excrescence

Ugly protruding lump

An excrescence is an abnormal outgrowth on a body or plant—a wart, tumor, or gnarled knob on a tree trunk.

The word extends to anything that protrudes awkwardly or seems like an unwanted addition: The new wing was an architectural excrescence on an otherwise elegant building.

The tone is almost always disapproving, suggesting something disfiguring or superfluous.
