gall
Resentment or cheek
Some meanings of gall arise from the gall bladder, the organ that stores bile (which is also called gall).
This extremely bitter substance is the inspiration for the meaning brazen impudence: She had the gall to ask me to lend her money after she didn’t pay back the last loan!
To gall someone is to irritate or vex them, perhaps unreasonably.
Another gall is a growth that appears on some plants as a result of insect infestation (oak gall).
Finally, a gall is a sore, especially on an animal, that emerges from chronic irritation or friction.
