burr
Hitchhiker on socks
A burr is the rough, prickly seed case of certain plants that clings to fur or clothing.
By extension, burr describes anything that sticks or irritates—a burr under your saddle is a persistent annoyance.
In metalworking, a burr is the rough edge left on cut metal.
A burr is also a rolled or trilled *r* sound, characteristic of certain regional accents: He spoke with a Scottish burr.
To burr is to speak with such a sound, or to form rough edges on metal.
