keratosis

Rough skin patches

Keratosis is a skin condition marked by rough, scaly patches caused by overgrowth of keratin, the protein that forms hair and nails.

The most common type, actinic keratosis, results from sun damage and appears on frequently exposed areas: The dermatologist froze several keratoses on his forehead.

Some forms are precancerous and require monitoring or removal.
