reperfusion

Flow returns again

Reperfusion is the restoration of blood flow to tissue that has been deprived of it.

The term appears most often in medical contexts involving heart attacks or strokes, where blocked arteries are reopened: The goal of emergency treatment is rapid reperfusion of the heart muscle.

Paradoxically, reperfusion itself can cause tissue damage as oxygen floods back into oxygen-starved cells.
