embolize

Plug a vessel

To embolize is to block a blood vessel, either deliberately or pathologically.

In medicine, embolization is a procedure that intentionally obstructs vessels to stop bleeding or cut off blood supply to tumors: The radiologist embolized the artery feeding the growth.

The word also describes what happens when a clot or other material lodges in a vessel and blocks flow.
