embolisms

Clots causing strokes

Embolisms are blockages in blood vessels caused by foreign material—typically blood clots, air bubbles, or fat globules—that travel through the bloodstream until they lodge somewhere and obstruct flow.

A pulmonary embolism blocks an artery in the lungs; a cerebral embolism can cause stroke.

The singular embolism refers to either the blocking material or the condition itself.
