leptons

Electrons and muons

Leptons are a class of elementary particles that do not experience the strong nuclear force.

Electrons are the most familiar leptons; the class also includes muons, tau particles, and their associated neutrinos.

The term comes from Greek for "small" or "light," since leptons were originally thought to be lighter than other particles—though the tau lepton proved heavier than some hadrons.
