magnetar

Hypermagnetic neutron star

A magnetar is a type of neutron star with an extraordinarily powerful magnetic field—roughly a thousand trillion times stronger than Earth's.

These collapsed stellar remnants occasionally release intense bursts of X-rays and gamma rays.

Magnetars are rare, with only about thirty known in our galaxy: The burst was traced to a magnetar in the constellation Sagittarius.
