tamponade

Pressure stopping blood flow

Tamponade is compression of an organ or vessel by accumulated fluid or blood.

Cardiac tamponade occurs when fluid fills the sac around the heart, preventing it from pumping effectively—a medical emergency.

The term also describes deliberate compression to stop bleeding: The surgeon used tamponade to control the hemorrhage.

Related to tampon, both deriving from the idea of plugging.
