diastolic

Between the beats

Diastolic describes the phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes and chambers fill with blood, as opposed to systolic, when it contracts.

The term appears most often in blood pressure readings, where the diastolic number is the lower figure: Her blood pressure was 120 over 80, with 80 being the diastolic.
