drumhead
Taut musical surface
The taut membrane stretched over one or both ends of a drum, struck to produce sound.
Drumheads were traditionally made of animal skin but are now often synthetic.
The term extends to things resembling this surface: a drumhead court-martial is a summary military trial conducted in the field, originally held around an upturned drum.
