steelpan

Hammered oil barrel

A steelpan is a percussion instrument made from an oil drum, with the top hammered into a concave shape and divided into sections that produce different pitches when struck.

Invented in Trinidad in the mid-20th century, steelpans are central to calypso and soca music and are played in large ensembles called steel bands.

Also called steel drum.
