double action

Cocks and fires

Double action describes a mechanism that performs two functions with a single motion.

In firearms, a double-action trigger both cocks and releases the hammer in one pull, unlike single-action guns requiring manual cocking first: a double-action revolver.

The term appears in other contexts where one movement accomplishes two tasks, as in certain fishing reels or pumps that work on both strokes.
