single-action

Manual hammer firearm

Single-action describes a firearm mechanism where the trigger performs only one function: releasing the hammer to fire.

The hammer must be manually cocked before each shot, either by pulling it back with the thumb or, in revolvers, by the cycling action.

Single-action triggers are lighter and crisper than double-action, prized for accuracy: a single-action revolver, single-action 1911 pistol.
