semi-automatic

Self-loading but triggered

Semi-automatic describes a mechanism that performs part of a sequence automatically but requires manual input to continue.

A semi-automatic firearm fires one round per trigger pull, automatically ejecting the spent cartridge and loading the next, but won't fire again until the trigger is released and pulled again—distinguishing it from fully automatic weapons.

The term applies beyond firearms: a semi-automatic transmission shifts some gears automatically while requiring driver input for others.
