overspray

Paint beyond target

Overspray is the portion of sprayed material—paint, pesticide, adhesive—that misses its target and lands elsewhere.

It's a common problem in automotive painting, graffiti, and agricultural spraying: The overspray from the fence got all over the patio furniture.

The term also functions as a verb: Be careful not to overspray onto the trim.
