husky

Rough and low

Husky has two unrelated origins.

One comes from husk—husky corn has its husk on, and a husky voice is rough and dry like a husk.

This extends to sturdy or burly: a husky farmhand.

The other husky is a sled dog bred for Arctic conditions, probably from a shortening of Eskimo.

A team of huskies pulled the sled across the ice.
