mushing

Dog-team snow travel

Mushing is the sport or practice of traveling over snow with a dog sled.

The driver, called a musher, stands on the sled runners and commands a team of dogs: She's been mushing in Alaska for twenty years.

The term extends to recreational dog sledding and competitive races like the Iditarod. "Mush" as a command to start the dogs may come from French *marche*.
