displacer

What pushes aside

A displacer is something that displaces—pushes aside or takes the place of something else.

In engineering, it refers specifically to a component in Stirling engines that shuttles gas between hot and cold chambers without compressing it, distinct from a piston.

More generally, anything that forces something from its position: The new highway was a displacer of entire neighborhoods.
