water displacement
Archimedes' bath revelation
Water displacement is a method for measuring the volume of an irregular object by submerging it in liquid and observing how much the water level rises.
The principle, famously associated with Archimedes, works because the submerged object pushes aside a volume of water exactly equal to its own volume: We measured the rock's volume by water displacement.
The term also describes the amount of water pushed aside by a ship's hull, used as a measure of the vessel's size.
