disownment

Cutting off kin

Disownment is the act of disowning—rejecting or severing ties with someone or something previously claimed as one's own.

Most often applied to family relationships: His disownment by his father left him without inheritance or support.

The word also extends to repudiating beliefs, actions, or associations: Her public disownment of her earlier views surprised no one.
