directress

Woman in charge

A directress is a woman who directs—the feminine form of director.

The word appears in older texts for women heading institutions, schools, or organizations: The directress of the orphanage supervised thirty children.

Now largely replaced by the gender-neutral director, though it persists in some contexts, particularly for the lead teacher in Montessori education.
