manageress

Woman in charge

A manageress is a female manager—a woman in charge of a business, shop, or staff.

The word was common when English marked occupations by gender: actress, stewardess, manageress.

It now sounds dated or condescending, as *manager* serves for all genders.

Still used in British English, particularly for women running shops or restaurants.
