schoolmistress

Woman who teaches

A schoolmistress is a woman who teaches at or runs a school, particularly at the primary level.

The term is old-fashioned, largely replaced by teacher.

It survives in figurative use for someone who is strict, prim, or moralistic: She spoke in a schoolmistress tone that made everyone feel scolded.
