underground church
Secret worship space
An underground church is a religious community that meets secretly, typically because the government prohibits or restricts its faith.
The term most often describes Christian congregations in countries where Christianity is banned or heavily regulated: Underground churches have flourished in China despite state persecution.
The underground suggests both secrecy and resistance—believers gathering in homes, basements, or other concealed locations to worship without official sanction.
