coulee

Western carved gully

A coulee is a deep ravine or gulch, typically dry or carrying only intermittent water, formed by erosion in the western North American landscape.

The term is especially common in the northern Great Plains and Pacific Northwest: We hiked down into the coulee to find shade.

In Louisiana, coulee can mean a small stream or bayou.
