copyholder

Desk reading stand

A copyholder is a device that holds documents upright beside a computer screen or typewriter, allowing easier reference while typing.

In older usage, a copyholder was a person who read manuscripts aloud to a proofreader, or in English law, a tenant who held land by copy of the manor court roll rather than by deed.
