phosgene

Toxic industrial compound

Phosgene is a highly toxic industrial chemical, a colorless gas with a smell often compared to freshly cut hay.

It was notoriously used as a chemical weapon in World War I, where it caused more deaths than any other poison gas.

Today it serves primarily as a precursor in manufacturing plastics, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals.

Exposure damages the lungs and can be fatal even at low concentrations.
