caravansary

Travelers' roadside lodge

A caravansary is an inn built around a courtyard where traveling merchants and their animals could rest along trade routes, especially in the Middle East and Central Asia.

The word evokes dusty roads, loaded camels, and the commerce of the Silk Road.

By extension, any busy inn or gathering place for travelers: The hostel was a caravansary of backpackers from thirty countries.
