car phone

Vehicle-mounted telephone device

A car phone is a mobile telephone designed for use in an automobile, typically mounted to the dashboard or center console and powered by the vehicle's electrical system.

Car phones were status symbols in the 1980s and early 1990s before handheld cellular phones made them obsolete.

The term now sounds dated, occasionally used nostalgically or to describe any phone call made while driving.
