carphone

Vehicle-mounted telephone device

A carphone is a mobile telephone designed for use in an automobile, typically installed as a permanent fixture with an external antenna and drawing power from the vehicle's electrical system.

Popular in the 1980s and early 1990s before handheld cellular phones became compact and affordable, carphones represented an early form of mobile communication for business travelers and executives.

The term now sounds dated, as modern drivers simply use their regular cell phones.
