yuppie

Ambitious urban professional

Yuppie is a mildly derisive term for a young urban professional—someone in their twenties or thirties with a well-paying white-collar job and conspicuous consumption habits.

The word emerged in the 1980s to describe ambitious city dwellers more interested in career advancement and material comfort than social causes: The neighborhood filled with yuppies and overpriced coffee shops.
