calves

Young cows, collectively

Calves is the irregular plural of calf, with two distinct meanings.

Young cattle and certain other large mammals (elephants, whales) are called calves in their first year or so of life.

The fleshy back part of the lower leg, between the knee and ankle, is also called a calf; athletes often speak of tight or sore calves after intense exercise.

The calves were weaned at eight weeks.

My calves are killing me after that hike.
