golden calves
Biblical false gods
Golden calves are objects of misplaced worship or excessive devotion, especially material wealth pursued at the expense of spiritual or moral values.
The term comes from the biblical story in which the Israelites, in Moses's absence, fashioned a calf from gold jewelry and worshipped it as an idol.
Silicon Valley's golden calves—disruption, growth, exit—have replaced older forms of meaning.
