whelps

Litter of puppies

Whelps are the young of dogs, wolves, or other canines—essentially puppies.

The term extends to other mammals: lion whelps, bear whelps.

As a verb, to whelp is to give birth to such young: The bitch whelped six pups.

Applied to humans, whelp is contemptuous, suggesting an ill-mannered or insignificant youth: insolent whelp.
