calving

Ice shelf splitting

Calving is the act of giving birth to a calf.

Cows calve, as do whales, seals, and other large mammals whose young are called calves.

The term also describes ice breaking off from a glacier or iceberg: We watched the glacier calving into the sea.

Both senses involve something large producing something smaller from itself.
