blue coat
Officer's standard attire
A blue coat is a coat that is blue, but the phrase has historically referred to people identified by such garments.
British police officers were once called blue coats for their uniforms.
The term also designated students at certain charity schools in England, particularly Christ's Hospital, where pupils wore distinctive long blue coats.
During the American Civil War, blue coats were Union soldiers, whose uniforms contrasted with Confederate gray.
