bluebelly
Spiny scales, cerulean
Bluebelly has several meanings united by the color blue appearing on or near the belly.
Most commonly, it refers to the western fence lizard, a small reptile with distinctive blue patches on its underside.
During the American Civil War, bluebelly was a derisive Southern term for Union soldiers, whose uniforms were blue: The bluebellies burned everything when they marched through.
