butternuts

White walnut seeds

Butternuts are the edible nuts of a North American walnut tree, also called white walnut.

The tree itself is a butternut.

During the American Civil War, butternut referred to Confederate soldiers or Southern sympathizers, from the yellowish-brown dye made from butternut bark that colored homespun clothing: The butternut cavalry rode through at dawn.
