Union soldier
Blue-coated combatant
A Union soldier was a member of the military forces fighting for the United States federal government during the American Civil War (1861–1865), opposing the Confederate states that had seceded.
The term distinguishes these soldiers from their Confederate counterparts: My great-great-grandfather was a Union soldier who fought at Gettysburg.
