brit milah

Eighth-day Jewish rite

Brit milah is the Jewish ritual circumcision performed on male infants eight days after birth.

The ceremony, conducted by a mohel (ritual circumciser), marks the covenant between God and Abraham described in Genesis.

The term is Hebrew, literally meaning "covenant of circumcision." Also called a bris, the Yiddish form: We're going to the bris on Sunday.
