godparents
Christening ceremony sponsors
Godparents are the adults who sponsor a child at baptism, traditionally promising to help with the child's religious upbringing.
In Christian tradition, a godfather and godmother take on a special relationship with the godchild, sometimes expected to serve as guardians if the parents die.
The role has become largely ceremonial in secular contexts, where godparents are simply trusted friends or family members given honorary status in a child's life.
We asked my college roommate and her husband to be godparents.
