bog body
Preserved marsh corpse
A bog body is a human corpse preserved in a peat bog.
The acidic, oxygen-poor conditions tan the skin and preserve soft tissue while dissolving bones, sometimes keeping bodies intact for thousands of years.
Most famous examples come from Northern Europe: The Tollund Man is perhaps the best-known bog body.
Many show signs of ritual killing.
