cotton grass

Wetland white tufts

Cotton grass is a grasslike plant of wet, boggy areas, named for the fluffy white tufts that top its seed heads.

These cottony plumes, which help seeds disperse on the wind, give marshes and moors a distinctive appearance in summer.

Despite the name, cotton grass is actually a sedge, not a true grass.
