limpkin

Florida marsh bird

A limpkin is a large wading bird of the American tropics and subtropics, brown with white streaks, named for its limping gait.

It feeds almost exclusively on apple snails, using its curved bill to extract them from their shells.

The limpkin's eerie, wailing cry is distinctive: We heard limpkins calling across the marsh at dawn.
